The F4U-1D Corsair was a U.S. Navy and Marine Corps fighter used in World War II. Its powerful air-cooled engine was among the best of its time. To handle the engine's output, it used a large 3.82-meter propeller. Since a normal wing design would cause the propeller to hit the ground, the Corsair featured a distinctive inverted gull wing. This design allowed for shorter landing gear while still keeping the propeller safely above the ground.
