In the interim before the new Dassault bomber was brought into service, 18 Mirage IVAs were transformed into the IVP model, a version with equal penetration capacities, capable of carrying the CT52 reconnaissance container with cameras and thermographic infra-red system . The first operational squadron scrambled from Mont-de-Marsan on 1st May 1986 fitted with the new supersonic missile fitted with a nuclear warhead, which could be replaced by a conventional explosive designed for administering an inhibiting shot across the bows.
