The assault engineer-sapper brigade was created in WWII to storm well defended fortifications and break through the heavy enemy defenses. The abbreviated name in Russian is  SHISBR. The first assault engineer brigades were formed in Summer 1943. The brigade consisted of 2.204 soldiers.
