Zombies (other names also include dead men or the living dead) are fictional characters appearing in many movies (mainly horror movies) and in the pages of numerous novels, more fantasy than science. There are many indications that the English word "zombie", which was adopted in Polish, comes from the African terms zumbi or nzambi. It is worth adding that, according to Voodoo believers living in Haiti and the southern US states, a zombie is a person who was killed by a priest of this religion, and a few days after the funeral, he was resurrected from the grave and lives the so-called apparent life. The main purpose of zombies, in the Voodoo religion, is to do simple field work and minister to their "resurrector." It should also be remembered that at present, belief in zombies in Haiti is quite common, and it is not uncommon for people to have their arms and legs chopped off so that the deceased does not become a zombie. In popular culture, a zombie is a living corpse, completely enslaved by a character who directs his actions with slow movements, very primitive reflexes, and eats human flesh. One of the most important zombie films was George Romero's 1968 "Night of the Living Dead."
