The USS Lexington (CV-2), originally designated CC-1, was authorized to be completed as an aircraft carrier on July 1, 1922, and commissioned on December 14, 19277 On December 7, 1941, when word of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was received, Lexington immediately launched a search plane to hunt for the Japanese fleet. On May 7, 1942, Lewison's air group sank the Japanese light carrier SHOHO. 8th, LEXINGTON was hit by 2 torpedoes and 3 bombs, finally rolled over on her side and sank. Lewison received two battle stars for her World War II service.
