The Boeing B-47 Stratojet revolutionized strategic bombing when it entered service in 1951, introducing swept wings and jet propulsion to the bomber force. The 306th Bombardment Wing (Medium) operated B-47s as part of Strategic Air Command's nuclear deterrent during the height of the Cold War. With its six General Electric J47 turbojet engines mounted in pods under the wings, the B-47 could reach speeds over 600 mph and altitudes above 40,000 feet.
