Historical Background:

German Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers) were among the most elite and highly trained soldiers of World War II. These airborne forces were used decisively in the invasion of Norway and the Netherlands during the early Blitzkrieg campaigns, demonstrating the effectiveness of vertical envelopment tactics. Their operations reached a dramatic peak in the airborne assault on Crete in May 1941 (Operation Mercury), where despite achieving victory, the Fallschirmjäger suffered such heavy casualties that large-scale German airborne operations were never attempted again. The battle for Crete saw intense fighting as paratroopers dropped directly into combat zones, facing determined Allied resistance. Following Crete, these elite soldiers were primarily employed as ground infantry, fighting with distinction in Italy, France, and the Eastern Front, where their training and esprit de corps made them formidable opponents.
