Historical Background:

The American airborne landings in Normandy were the first United States combat operations of Operation Overlord and among the most daring military operations in history. On the night of June 5-6, 1944, approximately 13,100 paratroopers from the U.S. 82nd Airborne and 101st Airborne Divisions made night parachute drops behind enemy lines in occupied France. These elite soldiers jumped into darkness hours before the beach landings, tasked with securing key bridges, road junctions, and causeways to prevent German reinforcements from reaching the invasion beaches. Despite scattered drops that left many units far from their intended landing zones, the paratroopers demonstrated exceptional initiative and courage, forming ad-hoc combat groups and accomplishing their missions against determined German resistance. The airborne operations, though costly, proved crucial to the success of D-Day and established the American paratroopers as among the finest soldiers of World War II.
