Historical Significance
The Polikarpov I-16 was a revolutionary aircraft when it first flew in 1933, introducing features that would become standard on all future fighters. It saw extensive combat in the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the early years of World War II on the Eastern Front. Despite being outclassed by newer German fighters by 1941, the I-16 remained in Soviet service throughout the war, with pilots using its exceptional maneuverability to compensate for its lack of speed.

About the Polikarpov I-16 Type 24
The I-16 Type 24 was one of the final production variants, featuring improved armament with two 7.62mm ShKAS machine guns and two 20mm ShVAK cannons. Powered by a 1,000hp M-62 or M-63 radial engine, the Type 24 could reach speeds of 326 mph and had a service ceiling of 29,500 feet. The aircraft's stubby fuselage and short wingspan gave it exceptional roll rate and turning ability, making it a formidable dogfighter in the hands of skilled pilots. The I-16's robust construction and ability to absorb battle damage made it a favorite among Soviet pilots despite its challenging handling characteristics.
Combat Service
The I-16 saw action in multiple conflicts including the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), battles against Japan at Khalkhin Gol (1939), the Winter War against Finland (1939-1940), and the early years of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1943). Soviet aces achieved numerous victories flying the I-16, and it remained the most numerous Soviet fighter at the time of the German invasion in June 1941.
