Historical Significance:

The Grumman TBM-3 Avenger was the U.S. Navy's primary torpedo bomber during World War II, playing a crucial role in defeating the Japanese fleet. The TBM-3 variant featured improved engines and weapons systems, making it the most capable version of the Avenger. USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) operated Avengers during major Pacific campaigns including the Battle of the Philippine Sea and operations against the Japanese home islands. The carrier earned 11 battle stars before being severely damaged by kamikaze attacks in May 1945. Avengers could carry a 2,000-pound torpedo or equivalent bomb load, providing devastating strike capability against enemy ships and ground targets.
