MPM Hobbies 1/48 Scale AN-Mk 1 Armour Piercing 1,600lb Bomb

Add authentic WWII-era heavy armor-piercing ordnance to your 1/48 scale bomber aircraft models with this detailed 3D printed AN-Mk 1 1,600-pound armor-piercing bomb from MPM Hobbies. As one of the heaviest armor-piercing bombs in the US arsenal, the AN-Mk 1 was specifically designed to defeat heavily armored naval vessels and reinforced fortifications—and now you can recreate that devastating capability with museum-quality detail on your B-25 Mitchell, B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, and other heavy bomber aircraft.

    Historical Significance

The AN-Mk 1 1,600-pound armor-piercing bomb holds a distinguished place in WWII ordnance history as a specialized weapon designed to penetrate the heaviest armor and most robust fortifications. Developed to defeat armored naval craft, reinforced concrete bunkers, and heavy steel construction, the AN-Mk 1 represented the pinnacle of armor-piercing bomb technology during World War II. The weapon saw extensive use in both the European and Pacific theaters, particularly in attacks against heavily defended targets including battleships, cruisers, submarine pens, and fortified installations. The bomb's exceptional penetration capability made it the weapon of choice when attacking targets that would resist conventional high-explosive bombs.

    Technical Details

The bodies are of single-piece, forged, machined construction, with pointed noses, parallel sides, and slight boat tailing. The base plate is of the male type, designed to withstand the tremendous forces generated during penetration of armor plate or reinforced concrete. Suspension in the 1,600-pound AP Bomb Mk 1 design was by means of lugs welded to bands, the bands being positioned by grooves on the external bomb surface. The newer designs, AN-Mk 1 and Mk 33, are suspended by fittings which screw into holes drilled into the bomb case and secured by bolts, providing improved structural integrity. The normal box-type tail assembly is used on these bombs, ensuring stable flight characteristics.

The later 1,600-pound AP Bombs Mk 1 Type were grooved to position the suspension band, while older bombs had a stud which fitted into a hole in the bomb body. The only fuze authorized for use with the AN-Mk 1 bomb is the AN-Mk 228 tail impact fuze, which provides reliable detonation after penetration. The difference between AN-Mk 1 Mod 1, AN-Mk 1 Mod 2, and AN-Mk 1 Mod 3 is in the manufacturer only; the complete rounds contain the same components and are the same in all physical aspects.

    Modeling Tips

For best results, clean any support material carefully with a sharp hobby knife and test-fit the bomb to your aircraft's bomb bay or external racks before final assembly. Prime the resin with a quality primer designed for resin parts, then paint according to your chosen scheme. Most AN-Mk 1 armor-piercing bombs were finished in overall dark gray or black with white or yellow stenciling indicating the armor-piercing designation. Reference photos will help ensure accurate finish and markings for your specific aircraft and time period.
