Designed and 3D printed in-house by MPM Hobbies, this set of four 1/48 scale BLU-107 Durandal anti-runway bombs brings authentic airfield denial ordnance to your 1/48 scale modern jet aircraft models. Named after a mythical medieval French sword, the Durandal was engineered to render enemy airfields inoperable—recreate that capability with museum-quality detail on your F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-15E Strike Eagle, Mirage 2000, and other tactical strike aircraft.

Historical Significance

The BLU-107 Durandal holds a distinguished place in modern military aviation as one of the most effective anti-runway weapons ever developed. Created by the French company Matra (now MBDA) during the Cold War, the Durandal was designed to destroy airport runways and deny their use to enemy aircraft. Unlike conventional bombs that simply create craters which can be quickly filled and repaired, the Durandal employs an ingenious two-stage detonation system that physically displaces and uplifts concrete runway slabs, making repairs far more difficult and time-consuming. This weapon saw combat use during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

Operational Details

After release from the aircraft, a rocket motor ignites to drive the weapon into the runway surface at a steep angle. The first explosion occurs beneath the runway, creating an upward force that breaks and displaces the concrete slabs. A delayed second explosion then detonates, scattering debris and compounding repair difficulties. The weapon's penetration capability also makes it effective against hardened aircraft shelters and reinforced structures.

3D Printing Information

Items are LCD-based SLA printed using UV cured resin and will be shipped unpainted with 3D print supports attached. Can be primed with acrylic, lacquer, or enamel paint. Lightly sand and/or prime any horizontal striations from the printing process. Remove supports starting from the tip down, freeing those connected to small and fragile details first. CA glue is recommended for attaching items to your model. Features may be brittle or extremely delicate — handle with care. Not intended for small children due to choking hazard; recommended for experienced modelers only. All items are printed in the order they are purchased.

Modeling Tips

Clean support material carefully with a sharp hobby knife and test-fit the weapon to your aircraft's pylon before final assembly. Prime with a quality resin primer, then paint according to your chosen scheme. Most BLU-107 Durandal weapons were finished in overall olive drab or light gray with yellow or white stenciling.
