Historical Background
Developed in the late 1960s for the US Navy, the AGM-78 was created to overcome the limitations of the AGM-45 Shrike. General Dynamics adapted the RIM-66 SM-1 surface-to-air missile into an air-launched anti-radiation weapon, with the first operational missiles issued in early 1968. Nicknamed the "STARM" (Standard ARM), it was carried by the F-105F/G and A-6B/E during the Vietnam War.
