Historical Significance - Battle of Midway
The Battle of Midway (June 4-7, 1942) was the turning point of the Pacific War. USS Enterprise played a crucial role in this decisive American victory, with her air group sinking three Japanese carriers. Enterprise's SBD Dauntless dive bombers delivered devastating attacks on the carriers Kaga and Akagi, while also contributing to the destruction of Hiryu. Despite being damaged by Japanese dive bombers on June 4th, Enterprise's crew made emergency repairs and she continued flight operations. The battle marked the end of Japanese naval dominance in the Pacific and began America's island-hopping campaign toward Japan.
About USS Enterprise (CV-6)
USS Enterprise (CV-6) was a Yorktown-class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1938. Displacing 25,500 tons and measuring 809 feet in length, Enterprise could carry up to 90 aircraft and reach speeds of 32.5 knots. She was one of only three American carriers in the Pacific at the start of World War II and participated in nearly every major naval engagement, including the Doolittle Raid, Battle of Midway, Battle of the Eastern Solomons, Battle of Santa Cruz, Battle of the Philippine Sea, and Battle of Leyte Gulf. Enterprise survived the war despite being heavily damaged multiple times, earning her the nickname 'The Grey Ghost' from Tokyo Rose, who repeatedly claimed she had been sunk. With 20 battle stars, Enterprise is the most decorated US ship of World War II.
