Historical Significance - VF-41 'Black Aces'
Fighter Squadron 41 (VF-41) 'Black Aces' is one of the US Navy's most storied fighter squadrons, established in 1945. Flying the F2H-3 Banshee during the 1950s, the Black Aces operated from aircraft carriers in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, maintaining combat readiness during the Cold War. The squadron's distinctive black and white markings, featuring the iconic ace of spades insignia, made their aircraft instantly recognizable. VF-41 would go on to become one of the Navy's premier fighter squadrons, eventually transitioning to the F-4 Phantom II and later the F-14 Tomcat before decommissioning in 1995.
About the F2H-3 Banshee
The McDonnell F2H Banshee (company designation McDonnell Model 24) was an American single-seat carrier-based jet fighter aircraft deployed by the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps from 1948 to 1961. A development of the FH Phantom, it was one of the primary American fighters used during the Korean War and was the only jet-powered fighter deployed by the Royal Canadian Navy. The F2H-3 variant featured an elongated fuselage for increased fuel capacity, improved avionics, and enhanced all-weather capabilities. Powered by two Westinghouse J34-WE-34 turbojet engines producing 3,250 pounds of thrust each, the Banshee could achieve speeds up to 580 mph. Armed with four 20mm cannons and capable of carrying rockets or bombs on underwing pylons, the Banshee proved to be a reliable and effective carrier-based fighter. The aircraft's name is derived from the banshee of Irish mythology.
