About the P-51B Mustang
The North American P-51B Mustang represented a revolutionary leap in fighter performance when it entered service in late 1943. By replacing the original Allison engine with the Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin V-1650, the P-51B gained exceptional high-altitude performance and speed. This transformation turned the Mustang from a capable low-altitude fighter into the war's premier long-range escort, capable of accompanying bomber formations deep into Germany and back.
Game-Changing Impact
The P-51B's arrival in the European Theater in December 1943 marked a turning point in the strategic bombing campaign. For the first time, Allied bombers had an escort fighter with the range to protect them throughout their missions to targets deep in the Reich. The Mustang's combination of speed, maneuverability, and endurance allowed it to dominate German fighters, achieving air superiority over Europe by mid-1944.
Distinguished Service
P-51B Mustangs served with numerous fighter groups including the famous 4th, 354th, and 357th Fighter Groups in Europe. The aircraft also equipped the Tuskegee Airmen's 332nd Fighter Group, whose red-tailed P-51s became legendary for their dedication to protecting bomber formations. The P-51B's framed canopy and razorback fuselage gave it a distinctive appearance compared to the later bubble-canopy P-51D.
