Historical Significance:

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was the largest and heaviest single-engine fighter of World War II, earning legendary status for its ruggedness and firepower. The "Razorback" variant featured the original raised spine canopy design before the introduction of the bubble canopy. Powered by the massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine producing 2,000 horsepower, the P-47D could carry an impressive bomb load while maintaining eight .50 caliber machine guns. Thunderbolts excelled in both air-to-air combat and ground attack roles, serving with distinction in the European and Pacific theaters. The aircraft's ability to absorb tremendous battle damage and bring pilots home safely made it beloved by its crews.
