About the Curtiss H-75 A1/A2
In 1935, the Curtiss-Wright Hawk Model 75 took to the air for the first time—a modern, all-metal monoplane fighter with retractable landing gear designed for a US Army Air Corps competition. After refinement, it proved to be one of the finest and most modern aircraft of the early World War II period. Its performance was excellent across the board, and it was particularly noted for its exceptional maneuverability, superior even to the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Hurricane.
Produced in excess of 1,000 examples, various versions of the H-75 served with air forces of over a dozen countries from South Africa to Finland and from Brazil to China. The most important user was France, which ordered several series (A1 to A4) differing in armament and engines, receiving more than 400 examples. These proved to be the finest fighters used by the Armée de l'Air in the early months of World War II.
Many French aces scored victories over the Luftwaffe flying H-75s, as did Polish and Czechoslovak pilots fighting in France's defense. After the armistice, numerous Curtiss fighters were evacuated to French Africa, forming the backbone of Vichy aviation. Some French aircraft captured by Germans were handed over to Finland, where they successfully fought against the Red Army until war's end.
All serial H-75s were equipped with radial engines. When the airframe was adapted to the Allison inline engine, it evolved into the legendary Curtiss P-40, produced in over 13,000 examples.
