About the FM-2 Wildcat

The FM-2 Wildcat represented the ultimate evolution of Grumman's famous carrier fighter. When the US Navy introduced more powerful fighters like the F6F Hellcat and F4U Corsair to fleet carriers, a need remained for a lightweight fighter suitable for smaller escort carriers. Grumman designed the XF4F-8 prototype with lighter construction, armament reduced to four .50 caliber machine guns, and a more powerful Pratt & Whitney R-1830-86 engine. To counter the increased engine torque, the aircraft received a distinctive taller vertical tail for improved flight stability.

The new Wildcat's performance was significantly better than its predecessors, though optimized for low-altitude operations due to the lack of a two-stage supercharger. This was by design—FM-2s performed close air support, anti-submarine warfare patrol, and combat air patrol missions, all conducted primarily at low level. The improved performance surprised enemy pilots; FM-2s could fight the A6M5 Zero and Bf 109G on equal terms. Later series aircraft carried six HVAR unguided rockets underwing for ground attack missions.

Production was transferred to General Motors plants under the new FM-2 designation. Entering service in late 1943, the FM-2 served with distinction in the Battle of the Atlantic and the Island Hopping Campaign across the Pacific. A total of 4,437 FM-2s were built—representing 65% of all Wildcat production. The type proved so successful that 370 served with the Royal Navy as the Wildcat VI, defending Arctic convoys and supporting operations in European waters.
