About the Fokker E.V (D.VIII)
The Fokker E.V, later redesignated D.VIII, was a German parasol-wing fighter aircraft designed by Reinhold Platz and built by Fokker-Flugzeugwerke. First flown in 1918, this innovative design featured a single cantilever wing mounted above the fuselage, providing excellent visibility and maneuverability. Despite initial structural issues that were quickly resolved, the E.V proved to be a capable fighter with outstanding climb rate and agility.
Powered by the Oberursel Ur.II rotary engine, the Fokker E.V entered service in August 1918, just months before the Armistice. Its clean aerodynamic design and light weight made it one of the best-climbing fighters of WWI. Though it arrived too late to significantly impact the war's outcome, the E.V demonstrated advanced design concepts that influenced post-war aviation development.
