About the Hawker Hurricane Mk I
The Hawker Hurricane Mk I stands as one of the most important British fighters of World War II and the true hero of the Battle of Britain. Designed by Sydney Camm, the Hurricane was Britain's first monoplane fighter and the first RAF aircraft capable of exceeding 300 mph. When war broke out in 1939, Hurricanes equipped more RAF squadrons than any other fighter type.
During the Battle of Britain in summer 1940, Hurricanes shot down more enemy aircraft than all other defenses combined, including the more famous Spitfire. The Hurricane's rugged construction, stable gun platform, and ease of repair made it ideal for the desperate air battles over Britain. Its thick wing could accommodate eight .303 caliber machine guns, providing devastating firepower against German bombers.
Polish pilots flying with RAF squadrons achieved remarkable success in Hurricanes. Sgt Antoni Głowacki's feat of shooting down five German aircraft in one day on August 24, 1940, made him the only "one day ace" of the Battle of Britain. Sgt Josef Frantisek, a Czech pilot flying with 303 Polish Squadron, became the top-scoring Allied pilot of the Battle of Britain with 17 confirmed victories, most achieved in Hurricane R4175/RF-R included in this kit.
The tropical variant served with distinction in North Africa and East Africa, where modified Hurricanes with Vokes filters defended against Italian and German forces. The Expert Set allows you to build any of these historic variants with exceptional detail.
