About the Ki-43 II in Foreign Service

The Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa served not only with the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force but also with several allied and puppet state air forces during World War II. Thailand operated Ki-43 fighters as part of their Royal Thai Air Force, using them in combat operations in Southeast Asia. The Manchukuo Air Force, serving the Japanese puppet state in Manchuria, also flew Hayabusas. Additionally, captured Ki-43s were evaluated by Allied forces, and some aircraft were transferred to Indonesian and other Southeast Asian forces in the immediate post-war period.

These foreign service aircraft often featured unique markings and color schemes that distinguished them from standard Japanese Army Air Force machines. Thai Ki-43s displayed the distinctive red, white, and blue roundels of the Royal Thai Air Force, while Manchukuo aircraft carried the yellow and red markings of that puppet state. These variants provide fascinating modeling subjects that showcase the international service of this important Japanese fighter.

The Ki-43 II variant featured improved armament and engine performance over the original model, making it more effective in combat.
