About the P-51B Mustang

The P-51B Mustang represented a revolutionary leap in fighter aircraft performance when it entered service in 1943. By mating the North American Mustang airframe with the British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine (built under license by Packard as the V-1650), designers created a fighter with exceptional range, speed, and high-altitude performance. The P-51B could escort American bombers all the way to Berlin and back, fundamentally changing the strategic bombing campaign over Europe.

Distinguished by its Malcolm hood canopy (before the bubble canopy of later variants), the P-51B featured four .50 caliber machine guns in the wings and could carry drop tanks for extended range missions. These fighters equipped many of the most successful USAAF fighter groups in Europe, and their pilots achieved remarkable victory tallies against the Luftwaffe. The P-51B's combination of range, performance, and firepower made it one of the most important Allied fighters of World War II.
