About the PZL P.7a
The PZL P.7a holds a special place in aviation history as Poland's first all-metal fighter aircraft and one of the most advanced fighters of the early 1930s. Designed by Zygmunt Puławski at the PZL (Państwowe Zakłady Lotnicze) factory, the P.7a featured an innovative high-mounted gull wing that provided excellent visibility for the pilot while maintaining structural strength. This distinctive design became the signature of Polish fighter aircraft throughout the interwar period.
First flown in 1930 and entering service in 1933, the P.7a represented a significant technological achievement for Poland. Powered by a Bristol Jupiter radial engine (license-built in Poland), the aircraft demonstrated excellent maneuverability and climb rate. Armed with two 7.92mm machine guns, it served as the Polish Air Force's primary fighter until gradually replaced by the more advanced PZL P.11c in the late 1930s.
The P.7a equipped numerous Polish fighter squadrons during the mid-1930s, including the famous 121st and 123rd Fighter Squadrons based in Cracow. These aircraft wore colorful pre-war markings that reflected the pride and professionalism of the Polish Air Force. The type also served as a trainer at Poland's prestigious Air Force schools, where future aces like Witold Urbanowicz learned their craft. Though obsolete by 1939, the P.7a's innovative design influenced subsequent Polish fighters and demonstrated Poland's capability in advanced aircraft design.
The Expert Set version includes photo-etched parts that allow advanced modelers to create highly detailed representations of this historic fighter.
