About the Sea Hurricane Mk IIc

The Sea Hurricane Mk IIc represented a significant upgrade over earlier navalised Hurricane variants. In spring 1941, the RAF began receiving Hurricane IIc fighters armed with four 20mm Hispano cannons. The Royal Navy had been operating older Mk I machines navalised as Sea Hurricane Ib, which featured weaker engines and eight machine guns. The dramatic events of Operation Pedestal—the Malta convoy escort in August 1942—finally convinced naval command that cannon-armed Hurricanes were essential for aircraft carrier operations.

First used in combat during Operation Torch (the North Africa landings), Sea Hurricane IIc aircraft were equipped with naval radio, IFF equipment, and arrestor hooks for carrier landings. Unlike earlier variants, catapult spools were not used, so wing flaps remained unshortened. The wings were non-folding, and during service, undercarriage covers were often trimmed to prevent catching on arresting cables. Underwing fuel tanks greatly increased operational range, and rockets were sometimes carried for anti-submarine warfare.

Operating from escort aircraft carriers, Sea Hurricane IIc fighters served both as fleet defense fighters and as part of anti-submarine units. Their four 20mm cannons proved highly effective against surfaced U-boats and heavy German reconnaissance aircraft. These rugged naval fighters even successfully defended carriers against attacks by Messerschmitt Bf 110 fighters, demonstrating their versatility in the demanding maritime environment.
