About the Gloster E.28/39 Pioneer

The Gloster E.28/39, also known as the Pioneer or Squirt, was Britain's first jet-powered aircraft and one of the pioneering jets in aviation history. First flown on May 15, 1941, this experimental aircraft was designed to test Frank Whittle's revolutionary turbojet engine. The E.28/39 proved the viability of jet propulsion and directly influenced the development of the Gloster Meteor, Britain's first operational jet fighter. Only two prototypes were built, making this aircraft a significant milestone in aviation history and the dawn of the jet age.
