About the I-16 Type 5 (1938-1941)
The Polikarpov I-16 was a revolutionary Soviet fighter aircraft that became one of the first low-wing cantilever monoplanes with retractable landing gear to enter service. The Type 5 variant, produced from 1938 to 1941, featured improved armament and became one of the most widely produced versions. During this period, the I-16 saw intense combat over Spain, Mongolia (against Japanese forces at Khalkhin Gol), and Finland during the Winter War. Despite being outclassed by newer fighters by 1941, the I-16 remained in frontline service during the early stages of Operation Barbarossa, where Soviet pilots used its excellent maneuverability to fight against technologically superior German aircraft.
