Matching species to the region and season being modeled keeps a landscape credible from any viewing angle.

Scale, Height and Forced Perspective

The same tree can play different roles depending on scale: a foreground specimen in N scale often becomes a mid-ground tree in HO and a distant tree in O scale. Placing taller trees near the layout edge and shorter ones toward the backdrop creates depth without extra benchwork. Varying height within a single stand avoids the repetitive look that gives away a miniature.

Planting and Forest Techniques

Natural forests grow in irregular clusters with open glades, ragged edges and uneven spacing, so avoid rows and even gaps. Drilling planting holes and securing trunks with adhesive keeps trees stable during handling and cleaning. Adding underbrush, ground foam, static grass and fallen timber at the forest floor ties trees into the terrain instead of leaving them perched on it.
