Historical Significance:
USS Missouri (BB-63) was commissioned in June 1944 and became one of the most famous battleships in naval history. On September 2, 1945, General Douglas MacArthur accepted Japan's formal surrender aboard Missouri in Tokyo Bay, officially ending World War II. The battleship continued to serve through the Korean War, was reactivated in the 1980s for Operation Desert Storm, and is now a museum ship at Pearl Harbor. Missouri's massive 16-inch guns could fire 2,700-pound shells over 23 miles, making her one of the most powerful warships ever built.
