Historical Background

BM-8-24 was a conversion of Red Army T-60 light tanks to serve as rocket launcher carriers. Tank hulls were selected for quick conversion in which their hulls, drive train, and general design remained unchanged and rocket launching hardware was added over the hull in place of the standard turret and its applicable main gun armament. The 82mm rockets used in the vehicles were officially designated as "BM-8", "24" was used to signify the number of launch rails installed. Conversions of tanks to BM-8-24 were handled from July to September of 1941 at the Kompressor plant. These improvised rocket launchers provided Soviet forces with mobile artillery support during the desperate early months of Operation Barbarossa, when the Red Army needed every available weapon system to counter the German invasion. The BM-8-24 represented Soviet ingenuity in rapidly adapting existing equipment to meet urgent battlefield requirements.
