Sanding & Finishing Supplies for Scale Models

Achieving a competition-quality finish on a scale model kit requires the right abrasives, files, and polishing compounds at every stage of the build. Whether you're removing mold seams, smoothing putty fills, or bringing a painted surface to a mirror shine, the tools below cover every step of the process.

Abrasives

Sanding sponge sheets and waterproof papers are the foundation of surface preparation. Tamiya sanding sponge sheets are available in grits ranging from 180 through 3000, mounted on a flexible foam backing that conforms to curved surfaces — ideal for aircraft fuselages, ship hulls, and automotive bodies. GSI Creos Mr. Hobby waterproof papers (No. 200, 400, 600, and 800) and sanding sponge sheets (400 through 2000 grit) offer comparable precision for fine detail work. Browse all in-stock abrasives.

Files & Sanding Sticks

Rigid files and sanding sticks excel at seam removal, gate cleanup, and shaping resin or styrene parts. Excel Hobby Tools equaling and round files feature a Cut #2 knurl handle for secure grip during detailed work. Excel sanding sticks accept interchangeable belts in grits from #80 through #600. The Squadron Tools Sanding Stick Value Pack includes five sticks covering extra fine through coarse grits in a single set. Testors needle files provide ten profile shapes — flat, round, triangle, square, half-round, and more — for accessing tight recesses and panel lines. Browse all in-stock files and sanding sticks.

Polishing Supplies

Final-stage polishing removes fine scratches and restores gloss to clear parts and painted surfaces. Tamiya polishing compound sponges (87192) come in three sizes — small, medium, and large — designed to apply polishing compound evenly without introducing new swirl marks. Pair them with the GSI Creos Mr. Hobby Mr. Compound Coarse (R191), which erases file scratches and creates a uniform cut surface equivalent to #600 sandpaper. Browse all in-stock polishing supplies.

Surface Preparation Workflow

A structured finishing sequence produces the most consistent results:

  1. Coarse shaping — Use files or #80–#180 grit sanding sticks to remove gates, seams, and excess material.
  2. Progressive sanding — Work through #240, #400, #600, #800, and #1000 grits to eliminate scratches from each prior stage.
  3. Ultra-fine finishing — Advance to #1500, #2000, and #3000 grit sponge sheets for pre-polish smoothness.
  4. Polishing — Apply compound with a sponge applicator, working in small circular motions until the surface reaches the desired sheen.
