Historical Background:

As the war approached, it was recognized that having the ability to drop elite troops behind enemy lines would be a major tactical advantage. By the end of December 1940, everything was in place to create the British 1st Airborne Division, whose distinctive mark was to be the maroon beret and a shoulder patch featuring Bellerophon astride the winged horse Pegasus. These elite paratroopers saw action in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Northwest Europe, earning a reputation for exceptional courage and tenacity. The 1st Airborne Division achieved immortal fame during Operation Market Garden in September 1944, when they fought the legendary Battle of Arnhem. Despite being surrounded and outnumbered, the British paratroopers held the bridge at Arnhem for nine days against overwhelming German forces, displaying extraordinary heroism that earned them the enduring respect of friend and foe alike.
