About the Douglas TBD-1 Devastator in WWII

The Douglas TBD-1 Devastator served as the U.S. Navy's primary torpedo bomber during the early years of World War II. While it had been advanced when introduced in the late 1930s, by 1942 it was outclassed by newer Japanese fighters. VT-2 and VT-8 were among the squadrons that flew the Devastator in combat, with VT-8 achieving legendary status for their heroic sacrifice at the Battle of Midway in June 1942, where the squadron suffered devastating losses while pressing home their attacks against the Japanese carrier fleet.
