HMS Calcutta was launched on July 9, 1918, at Vickers shipyard It was modified for air defense cruisers in 1939 and deployed in the Mediterranean.
On June 25, 1940, HMS Calcutta on the Bordeaux Coast joined the Canadian destroyers HMCS Fraser and HMCS Restigouche to rescue 4000 German refugees. But because it was a large sea wave, Calcutta and Fraser collided. Fraser eventually sank; 45 crew members were killed, and in Calcutta, 19 people were killed.
