Build an authentic replica of the revolutionary General Dynamics F-111A Aardvark as flown during the Vietnam War with this highly detailed 1/48 scale plastic model kit from Academy Models. This groundbreaking variable-sweep wing tactical bomber introduced revolutionary technology and served with distinction during some of the war's most challenging missions.

Historical Significance

The F-111A Aardvark was the world's first production variable-sweep wing aircraft and represented a quantum leap in tactical bombing capability. Deployed to Vietnam in 1968 during Operation Combat Lancer, the F-111A could penetrate enemy defenses at supersonic speeds and treetop level, delivering precision strikes in all weather conditions. Despite early operational challenges, the Aardvark proved its worth with its ability to strike targets that other aircraft couldn't reach, pioneering the concept of the modern strike fighter.

About the F-111A Aardvark

The General Dynamics F-111A was a revolutionary tactical bomber powered by two Pratt & Whitney TF30 turbofan engines with afterburners, producing 25,100 pounds of thrust each. The variable-sweep wing design allowed the aircraft to take off and land at relatively low speeds with wings extended, then sweep them back for high-speed, low-level penetration missions. The F-111A could carry up to 31,500 pounds of ordnance in its internal weapons bay and on external pylons, making it one of the most capable strike aircraft of its era.

Vietnam War Service

The F-111A first deployed to Southeast Asia in March 1968 during Operation Combat Lancer. Despite initial losses due to technical issues, the aircraft demonstrated unprecedented capabilities for all-weather, night precision bombing. The F-111's terrain-following radar allowed it to fly at extremely low altitudes in complete darkness or bad weather, striking targets that were previously unreachable. Later deployments in 1972-1973 during Operations Linebacker I and II proved the Aardvark's combat effectiveness, with the aircraft achieving an impressive mission success rate.
