About the Hughes 500-D

The Hughes 500-D (later MD 500D after McDonnell Douglas acquired Hughes Helicopters) is a light utility helicopter powered by an Allison 250-C20B turboshaft engine. The aircraft's compact size, excellent maneuverability, and relatively quiet operation made it popular for both military and civilian applications. The five-blade main rotor system provided smoother operation and reduced noise compared to earlier four-blade versions. Military variants could be equipped with TOW anti-tank missiles, making them effective light attack helicopters. The 500-D's reliability and versatility have kept it in service with operators around the world for decades.
