About the Spitfire Mk.XIV
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XIV represented a quantum leap in performance over earlier Merlin-powered variants. Equipped with the powerful 2,050 horsepower Rolls-Royce Griffon 65 engine, the Mk.XIV could reach speeds of 448 mph and climb to 20,000 feet in just over five minutes. The "C" wing configuration featured two 20mm cannons and four .303 machine guns, providing devastating firepower against both air and ground targets.
V-1 Flying Bomb Hunter
The Spitfire Mk.XIV gained fame as one of the most effective interceptors against German V-1 flying bombs during 1944-1945. Its exceptional speed and climb rate made it ideally suited for catching and destroying these early cruise missiles before they could reach London and other British cities. Spitfire Mk.XIV pilots developed specialized tactics for destroying V-1s, including tipping them over with their wingtips.
Late-War Service
Entering service in early 1944, the Spitfire Mk.XIV served primarily with the RAF's 2nd Tactical Air Force, providing air superiority over the D-Day invasion beaches and throughout the liberation of Europe. The aircraft's superior performance allowed it to engage and defeat the latest German fighters including the Fw 190D-9 and even early jet aircraft on favorable terms.
