The AGM-45 Shrike holds a distinguished place in aviation history as an American anti-radiation missile designed to home in on hostile anti-aircraft radar. The Shrike was developed by the Naval Weapons Center at China Lake in 1963 by mating a seeker head to the rocket body of an AIM-7 Sparrow, creating an innovative weapon that could track and destroy enemy radar installations. This development revolutionized the SEAD mission, providing aircraft with the ability to attack the radar systems guiding surface-to-air missiles and anti-aircraft artillery. The Shrike saw extensive combat use during the Vietnam War, where Wild Weasel aircraft used it to suppress North Vietnamese air defenses. It was phased out by the U.S. in 1992 and at an unknown time by the Israeli Air Force (the only other major user), and has been superseded by the more capable AGM-88 HARM missile.
The AGM-45 Shrike employed a passive radar homing seeker that detected emissions from enemy radar systems. This innovative adaptation extended the Shrike's utility beyond its original air-launched role, providing Israeli ground forces with a mobile anti-radar capability for suppressing enemy air defense systems.
