About the Blackburn Buccaneer S.2C/D:
Designed to have exceptional low-altitude performance, the Blackburn Buccaneer was one of the most capable aircraft of its kind. A triumph for Britain's aviation industry, the subsonic strike jet is the heaviest aircraft ever operated by the Royal Navy on an aircraft carrier. Originally developed in the 1950s to deliver nuclear weapons beneath enemy radar coverage, the Buccaneer featured an innovative area-ruled fuselage, boundary layer control, and powerful Rolls-Royce Spey engines that gave it exceptional low-level performance and stability. The S.2 variant, introduced in 1965, became the definitive version, serving with both the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm and later the RAF. The Buccaneer proved its worth during the Gulf War in 1991, where RAF Buccaneers used laser designation pods to guide precision weapons. Its ability to fly fast and low, combined with excellent range and payload capacity, made it one of the most effective strike aircraft of the Cold War era, remaining in RAF service until 1994.
