The North American P-51D Mustang is regarded by many as one of the most iconic American fighters of the Second World War and arguably the finest piston-engine fighter ever built. The marriage of the American P-51 airframe with the British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine (built under license by Packard as the V-1650) created a fighter with exceptional performance at all altitudes. The P-51D variant, introduced in 1944, featured the distinctive bubble canopy that provided unmatched visibility, making it easier for pilots to spot enemy aircraft. Armed with six .50 caliber machine guns and capable of carrying bombs or rockets, the Mustang excelled in both air-to-air combat and ground attack roles. However, its most important contribution was as a long-range bomber escort. With external fuel tanks, the P-51D could accompany B-17 and B-24 bombers all the way to targets deep in Germany and back, a capability that proved decisive in winning air superiority over Europe. The P-51 is recorded as being the top-scoring Allied fighter of the war, with 4,950 enemy aircraft destroyed.
