About the Supermarine Spitfire F.Mk.XVIII:

The Spitfire F.Mk.XVIII represented one of the final developments of the legendary Spitfire line, combining the powerful Rolls-Royce Griffon 65 engine with a strengthened airframe and improved systems. Introduced in 1945, the Mk.XVIII featured the distinctive five-blade contra-rotating propeller system that eliminated torque effects and improved handling. With clipped wings for enhanced low-altitude performance and roll rate, the Mk.XVIII was primarily used in the fighter-reconnaissance role, equipped with cameras in the rear fuselage. While it arrived too late to see significant action in World War II, the Mk.XVIII served extensively in the Far East and with the Indian Air Force during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Capable of speeds exceeding 440 mph and with excellent climb performance, the Mk.XVIII demonstrated that even at the dawn of the jet age, the Spitfire remained a formidable fighting machine. Its combination of the proven Spitfire airframe with the powerful Griffon engine created one of the most capable piston-engine fighters ever built.
