About the Hawker Hurricane Mk IIb
The Hurricane Mk.II represented a significant evolution of Sydney Camm's famous fighter design. First flown on June 11, 1940, this variant featured the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine that dramatically improved performance. The Mk IIb version was armed with 12 x 7.69mm machine guns in the wings, earning it the nickname "Hurribomber" when adapted for ground attack missions with bombs.
While the additional armament and bomb load reduced its effectiveness as a pure fighter, the Hurricane Mk IIb excelled in ground attack roles. These aircraft saw extensive action during Operation Jubilee (the Dieppe landing) and served with distinction in Africa and the Far East when equipped with tropical filters. The thick wing design allowed for versatile weapons configurations, making it an adaptable platform for various combat roles.
