The Hurricane Mk IIb Tropical variant was specifically modified for combat operations in harsh desert and tropical environments. Fitted with a Vokes tropical air filter beneath the nose, these aircraft served with distinction in the North African campaign and Far East theaters during World War II. The Mk IIb version featured 12 x 7.69mm machine guns in the wings and could carry bombs for ground attack missions, earning the nickname "Hurribomber."

The tropical filter modification was essential for preventing sand and dust from damaging the Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine, allowing these fighters to maintain operational effectiveness in extreme conditions. These aircraft played crucial roles in defending Malta, supporting the Desert Air Force in North Africa, and operating throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East theaters.
