About the H-21C Shawnee

The H-21 earned the nickname "the flying banana" from the upward angle of its aft fuselage, a shape developed to accommodate its tandem rotors and oversized propellers. Rugged and dependable, it served the U.S. Army from the early 1950s and carried troops and tactical supplies in Vietnam from 1961 onward.

Gunship Configuration

In the gunship role, the H-21 flew ground support missions armed with cannons under the nose or firing through the side doors. French forces in Algeria fitted an MG 151 cannon on the right door and a .30 caliber weapon on the left.
