The SUU-42/A Dispenser Pod holds a distinguished place in Vietnam War aviation history as one of the first operational infrared countermeasure systems deployed in combat. Used extensively by the AC-130 gunship and F-4 Phantom II in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, the SUU-42 provided critical protection against enemy heat-seeking surface-to-air missiles and air-to-air missiles. The pod dispensed infrared flares that created heat signatures more attractive to missile seekers than the aircraft's engines, decoying incoming missiles away from their intended target. This defensive system significantly improved aircraft survivability in the hostile air defense environment over North Vietnam and Laos, where SA-7 Strela shoulder-fired missiles and other heat-seeking weapons posed a constant threat to low-flying aircraft.
The SUU-42/A is an externally-mounted dispenser pod designed to carry and eject infrared decoy flares on command from the pilot or weapons system operator. When a missile launch was detected or suspected, the crew could activate the dispenser to eject one or more flares in rapid succession. These pyrotechnic flares burned at extremely high temperatures, creating infrared signatures that overwhelmed the relatively simple seeker heads of early heat-seeking missiles. The flares would fall away from the aircraft while continuing to burn, drawing the missile away from its intended target. The SUU-42 was particularly important for AC-130 gunships operating at night over hostile territory, where their extended loiter time and predictable flight patterns made them vulnerable to ground-based missile attacks. Lightly sand and/or prime any horizontal striations due to the printing process. Remove supports starting from the tip down and start by freeing those supports connected to small and fragile details. Recommend using CA for attaching item to model or filling any imperfections. Item(s) will have features that are brittle or extremely delicate and prone to breaking if not properly handled. 3D print support configurations may be different than the ones in the photos if applicable. Photos may include the CAD rendered file used for printing to highlight details that do not stand out well in regular photos. Not intended for small children due to choking hazard and should only be purchased by experienced modelers due fine details and printer support removal.
