About the IJN Atago

The Atago was the lead ship of her class of heavy cruisers, serving as the flagship of Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Armed with ten 8-inch guns and equipped with advanced fire control systems, she represented the pinnacle of Japanese cruiser design. The Atago was torpedoed and sunk by the USS Darter on October 23, 1944, during the opening stages of the battle.
