About the Northrop XP-61E Experimental Fighter

The Northrop XP-61E was an experimental day fighter variant developed from the P-61 Black Widow night fighter near the end of World War II. Recognizing the P-61's excellent airframe and powerful twin Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engines, Northrop proposed converting the aircraft into a long-range day fighter and escort fighter.

The XP-61E featured significant modifications including removal of the radar operator's position to create a streamlined single-seat cockpit, elimination of the radar equipment to reduce weight, and a redesigned canopy for improved visibility. Two P-61C airframes were converted to XP-61E configuration in 1945. The aircraft demonstrated excellent performance with its reduced weight and clean aerodynamics, but the program was cancelled with the end of the war before production could begin, making the XP-61E one of the rarest P-61 variants.
