The F4U Corsair was one of the most capable carrier-based fighter-bombers of World War II. Its powerful R-2800 engine, distinctive inverted gull wing design, and heavy armament made it a formidable opponent. The Corsair achieved an impressive 11:1 kill ratio against Japanese aircraft and continued to serve with distinction through the Korean War, demonstrating its enduring effectiveness.
Japanese forces nicknamed the Corsair "Whistling Death" due to the distinctive high-pitched sound produced by air flowing through the oil coolers in the wing roots during high-speed dives. This sound became a psychological weapon, striking fear into enemy forces as Corsairs approached for attack runs.
The Vought F4U-1 was the initial production variant of the Corsair, featuring the aircraft's signature inverted gull wing design that allowed for shorter, stronger landing gear while maintaining propeller ground clearance.
