About the Messerschmitt Me262

The Messerschmitt Me262 Schwalbe (Swallow) was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft, entering service with the Luftwaffe in 1944. With a top speed of 540 mph, the Me262 was nearly 100 mph faster than any Allied fighter, making it a revolutionary leap in aviation technology. The Me262A-1a fighter variant was armed with four 30mm cannons, while the A-2a bomber version carried bombs for ground attack missions. Despite its technological superiority, the Me262 arrived too late and in too few numbers to change the outcome of the war, but it paved the way for the jet age of aviation.
