The Hell Cannon is an improvised howitzer that fires propane (butane) gas cylinders loaded with explosives, developed by Syrian rebel forces during the Syrian Civil War. These mortar-like weapons were first rigged up in rural areas near Idlib by the Ahrar al-Shamal Brigade, then a member force of the Free Syrian Army, in 2013. Produced with materials and tools that could be obtained in a country besieged by war, the Hell Cannon has a range of approximately one mile. The homegrown howitzer caught on and was soon produced in slightly different variants in and around Aleppo, where it was used extensively for urban warfare. These improvised weapons represent a significant example of field-expedient artillery development during modern asymmetric conflicts.
